When is an ebook like a physical book? Maybe when a library can only lend one for a limited number of times. The publisher HarperCollins has asked OverDrive to set a limit of 26. After a library makes an HC ebook available that many times, the library will have to re-purchase it.

Why 26?

the 26 circulation limit was arrived at after considering a number of factors, including the average lifespan of a print book, and wear and tear on circulating copies.

Is this the form of a new business model for ebooks?

You betcha. As long as publishers as focused on best-sellers rather than the long tail they won’t appreciate that libraries have long functioned as their publicity agents.

And what biz exec will *really* focus on anything beyond his/her 6-month bonus?
